Fundraiser Supports Chuck Jones Center for Creativity’s Programs
Costa Mesa, Ca: Orange County business, WoodSnap, is joining with Chuck Jones Center for Creativity this year to present the eighth annual Red Dot Auction, the Center’s spring fundraiser. Twenty-five of their photographers will, along with WoodSnap, donate their work printed on the company’s signature birch wood, to create the WoodSnap section at the Red Dot Auction.
“WoodSnap was built on inspiring creative minds to print their favorite photos on wood. We love supporting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity as they are masters at teaching both young and young of heart to nurture their creative genius. The Red Dot Auction is an amazing event and WoodSnap and our community are very proud to be a part of it," said Andy Brown, CEO of WoodSnap.
In addition to the WoodSnap photographers, over 100 artists from around the globe have contributed one or more canvases and 3D art objects to this special fundraising event. What differentiates The Red Dot Auction from other silent art auctions is that the contributing artists have signed their artwork on the reverse of the work of art. Consequently, attendees at the event will not know who the artist is when bidding, they’ll only have their heart to follow.
“The artists who are participating come from all levels of notoriety, skill, and accomplishment, from students to emerging to established artists; we reached out around the world hoping to capture the imagination and appreciation of these artists. We are thankful that they were willing to help us achieve our goal of promoting creativity by providing a nurturing environment where it may grow and blossom,” said Craig Kausen, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Center. “We are particularly honored to have Andy Brown and his team at WoodSnap participate and donate their time and talent to our fundraising efforts.”
“This year, we’ve mixed it up by dividing the auction into five distinct groupings,” says John Gaydos, President of the Council for Creativity which organizes this event in the spring and the Center’s “Chuck Jones Big Draw” fundraiser in the fall, “there’s now areas devoted to Landscape, Portrait, Homage, Assemblage & 3D artworks, and new this year, the WoodSnap photographers. The donated artwork is remarkable in its breadth and diversity.”
The Red Dot Auction will take place on Friday, May 11, from 7 to 10 PM at the Center located at South Coast Collection (SoCo), 3321 Hyland Avenue, Costa Mesa, California. In addition to the silent auction, there will also be a live auction featuring a collection of artwork by the “Dover Boys” –famed animators mentored by Chuck Jones, including Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo and Juliet), Chris Bailey (Kim Possible, Hop), Jeff DeGrandis (Dora the Explorer, Wizard of Oz), and Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little).
Admission is $25.00 per person ($35 per at the door) and open to the public. Buy tickets by May 1st and receive 5 free raffle tickets when you sign in at the front desk the evening of the event. A special Preview Event will be held Friday, May 11, from 5:30 PM to 7 PM in advance of the Main Event and will include the opportunity to use your Red Dots before anyone else, view and place bids on the entire collection first, enjoy a musical performance by students of Music Vault Academy, be amazed by a Glitter-painting performance by James C. Mulligan, imbibe from an open bar, and savor hors d’oeuvres by 24 Carrots Events and Catering. Tickets for the Preview Event are $100 per person and are available at ChuckJonesCenter.org/RedDot.

Red Dot Auction VI--Preview Night Wow!
The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity's Red Dot Auction Preview night went off in spectacular fashion last night. With live entertainment provided by one of the Center's sponsors, Music Vault Academy, guests were treated to a room full of beautiful artwork in this year's silent auction and food provided by Casa del Lago Events. Artist Jimmy Mulligan did a performance painting that had the crowd all a-glitter and cartoonist brothers, Eric & Bill Teitelbaum wowed with their Chuck Talk on creativity and inspiration. Meanwhile, another sponsor, the Blackwing Foundation, interviewed a few of the attending artists about their process and their inspiration. Many "Red Dots" were applied to works throughout the night with our traditional cowbells ringing out each time one was used. With just a week left before the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year’s Red Dot Auction. This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Jimm Nawrocki.My current work is mixed media collage with a facial or figurative imagery focus.
I generally start out with an image that I have manipulated with the computer and print out this image on my ink jet printer. I then take that image, make different versions of it through additional manipulations, and cut and paste parts of these versions onto the original image to create a new image. I will also add different elements, tape, googly eyes, stickers, news print, wire mesh, cardboard or whatever, to the image to change it even more.
I don’t know that I have a specific goal or end result in mind when I go through this building process. I am very much drawn to making the image into something else, pushing it into a different direction, and just seeing what happens. I want my creation to have a certain ambiguity or uncertainty. My art should express a range of ideas and give the viewer something to think about.

June was born and raised in California where she continues to pursue her love of drawing, illustrating and painting. For over 20 years she has illustrated more than 120 collectable children's books for Publishers such as Disney, Random House, Scholastic, Golden Books, Lyrick and Publishers International. In these books, June illustrated licensed Characters including: Sesame Street Characters; Disney Characters, such as the Fab Five, Little Mermaid and Winnie The Pooh; Lamb Chop and Friends; and Barney the Dinosaur, among many others. But, according to June, “ my real love has always been painting on canvas, which gives me the freedom to create my own original art work. I love bringing interesting characters to life”.

Today we feature artist Jeffrey Speiser.Jeff Speiser’s talent for art was recognized at an early age. His kindergarten report card noted that he was the “best male artist in the class.” (Thanks to his mom for holding onto his report cards for all these years). Jeff attended Cornell University where he majored in Film and Animation. During and after college, Jeff worked as an assistant animator and layout artist for Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, MTV Animation and on the Academy Award-nominated short, The Chicken from Outer Space. Today, Jeff continues to work in design and marketing where he has completed projects for brands like Disney, The Walking Dead, Marvel Comics, the NBA, the NFL and more. Jeff lives in Celebration, FL with his wife Julie, son Connor and daughter Willow.

Today we feature artist Krissta Passanante.Many Items and scenes from my childhood still inspire and influence me to this day. As the daughter of a successful Hollywood set builder, I have always had an infatuation with old-fashioned theaters and props. Folklore and fairytales also instigate most of my work. Taking inspiration from my hometown in Utah, life and nature often collide in my paintings. I have always believed that my art should portray that which can only be imagined. As a result, my paintings and illustrations often materialize scenes that draw in surrealistic or dream-like qualities. I want the viewer to be able to think about the work and observe it as if they were the painter themselves. I hope they can imagine themselves in the fantasy world I have created.

Dan has described himself as an artist trapped in a deputy sheriff's body, as described in a 2012 Press-Enterprise article entitled, "Sheriff's Deputy Doubles as Artist." While he prides himself on the work he does for his community in uniform, his true love is, has always been, and will always be, creating art. He has been creating artwork in one medium or another since he can remember, literally since the age of 4. He looks forward to a day in the very near future when the artist in him can break free at last so as to devote his full time to his passion, which, of course, is art.Dan is a self-taught artist in every sense of the term. His keen, inborn ability was recognized very early on during his school career. Every instructor he had recognized his natural abilities and would challenge Dan to try many different mediums, including acrylic painting, water color, pen and ink, pencil renderings, and stained glass. There was no challenge too great. Finally, his instructors had to admit that there was nothing they could teach him. It was as if he was just born with a natural understanding of how the paint works to perfectly blend colors and create shading surpassing anything they had ever seen.
Dan has mastered the ability to create digital art on an iPad using his finger in place of a brush, resulting in amazing custom portraits and other interesting subjects which he then converts to Giclee prints on canvas or paper. The true-to-life resemblance and attention to detail he brings to each piece will have you asking, How does he do that?
Dan has done many commissioned pieces throughout the years and has donated countless pieces of art to churches, college jazz band calendars, the Leukemia Foundation, and the Juvenile Diabetes Walk, to mention just a few.
Dan Bowden's passion for his art is stronger than ever before, and his commitment to his art has become the very definition of who he is. He describes it as the driving force which fuels his creativity to new levels each day.
Those who have seen his artwork often comment on the vivid detail, depth of color, and hidden gems to look for in each piece of art, as he incorporates the Dove of Peace in all of his work.

Today we feature artist Carolyn Le.Carolyn draws on the sunny California days, and her love of storytelling to create her watercolor paintings. She has twice received a first-place Illustration Award for her portfolio from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Editor’s Day, have received a Merit Award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and have had her work shown in galleries in Los Angeles and London. The illustrations for her first picture book, Clarence and the Traveling Circus, received a Reader’s Choice Award for Illustration. Currently, Carolyn is writing and illustrating her own picture books and dreaming of ways to make her secret wish of having the power to fly come true.

The 5th Annual Red Dot Auction: the Photos!
The 5th Annual Red Dot Auction was held on two nights this year. A private preview cocktail party for donors, friends, supporters, and artists was held Thursday evening, April 30. On May 1st, the Red Dot Auction was open to the public and what a great turnout both nights! There was a lot of interest in the amazing art donated by over 225 artists this year! Huzzah! Much flurried bidding took place, Red Dots were flying, cowbells were ringing, glasses were tinkling, raffle prizes were drawn, and one lucky soul was the winning bidder at the live auction of an afternoon with Disney artist extraordinair, Mike Peraza, at his home studio where he'll get to see Peraza's astounding collection of animation collectibles and have a private lesson on how to draw your favorite Chuck Jones cartoon character! Woo hoo!The question on everyone's lips, of course, was, "What artist's work will you go home with tonight?" By the end of the evening there were nearly two hundred answers! Thank you to the marvelous artists without whose generous donation of their time, talent, and creativity this event would not exist. And a special thank you to all of the Center's supporters, we appreciate you!

Dear Artists and Friends of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity,Preparations are underway for the Fourth Annual Red Dot Auction benefiting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, coming in May. As you are aware, the arts and creativity in our schools and in our national conversation are always the first things to be eliminated or casually dismissed as unimportant.
In fact, it is creativity that opens the minds and hearts of all who allow it to; it brings greater freedom to their lives. It enhances one’s ability to solve problems and it opens minds to the differences that make each of us unique, erasing prejudices and bigotry. Creativity makes the world a better place.
Today I’m writing to ask you to donate a work of art to this year’s Red Dot Auction, to be held on Friday, May 9th from 7 to 10 PM at the Center in Costa Mesa, California. Again this year the canvas is 12” square and as last year, we ask that you sign the artwork on the reverse. You may prefer to work on paper or another substrate and that’s fine as long as we can mount it to the 12” square canvas for presentation the night of the event.
For those of you who may be unaware of the Red Dot Auction and how it works (or may have forgotten), here are the details: each artist contributes a work of art that is either painted on the canvas we provide you or creates a work of art that can be mounted to the canvas for display the evening of the auction. The artwork should be signed on the reverse so that bidders at this silent auction will not know who has created which painting—although savvy collectors may be aware of your particular style and will jealously guard their bids, hoping to land a work by ______ or ____ ______.
You might ask, “What should I paint?” Chuck’s life spanned most of the 20th century and with such a wealth of inspiration why not the life and times of Chuck Jones? That should not limit you to cartoon-related imagery, although many of the most sought after works at last year’s event were inspired by his Looney Tunes creations; you might be inspired by his love of reading, his enjoyment of painting “en plein air” or the fact that he liked to square dance.
Whatever you choose to do, of course, is up to you; it is your participation that is most important to us.

Costa Mesa, CA: The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity announced today that some of children whose lives have been enriched by its programs, will be the special guests at Creativity Season, to be held Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 6 PM to 10 PM at the Center, 3321 Hyland Avenue, Suite A, Costa Mesa, CA in the South Coast Collection (SoCo).
“Gala” tickets are $75.00 and include hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and dinner. Silent and live auctions will be presented throughout the evening and after dinner the Center is pleased to present a song cycle by Steve Landes, star of the Broadway revue, “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles.”
“Premiere” tickets are $125.00 per person and include all of the above plus the opportunity to sit with one of the ten noted artists that have worked with Chuck Jones or are respected artists in their fields such as: Eric Goldberg (Disney animation director “Aladdin”, “The Princess and the Frog”), Mike Peraza (Disney Art Director “The Little Mermaid”), Ron Burns (noted animal portraitist), Jeff DeGrandis (producer and director “Dora the Explorer”), as well as with Chuck’s wife, Marian Jones, a well-known photographer and writer, and his daughter, Linda, the founder of Linda Jones Enterprises, his publisher and art representative.

“Creativity is me just being me,” said Laura Tanimoto, one of the evening’s special guests. Inspired by Chuck Jones, Laura has participated in classes and volunteered at the Center over the past year. Her donated artwork for the Red Dot Auction was one of the most hotly contested of the evening’s silent auctions.
“We are excited to share the major milestones the Center has produced this past year,” said Craig Kausen, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Center and Chuck’s grandson. “And it will also help explain the important work we do. It is a challenge these days to find adequate arts education; creativity is one of the most important attributes of highly successful scientists, mathematicians, and business leaders. The Center is committed to helping everyone, but particularly children, find the creative genius that resides in each of us.”
About the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity: The Center was founded in 1999 by four-time Academy Award recipient and legendary animation creator and director, Chuck Jones. The Center’s vision is to inspire the innate creative genius within each person that leads to a more joyous, passionate, and harmonious life and world.
These are important goals, particularly in today’s world, when arts education is practically non-existent; we are dedicated to re-invigorating the creative spirit and we are doing it through art classes, exhibitions, lectures, and film festivals, all of which spring from the material in the Chuck Jones archive. Jones was a determined saver and his writings, art, and other ephemera from a nine-decade life, along with his philosophy of guiding and nurturing instruction, form the basis of our programs.
About Steve Landes: From New York’s famed Broadway to the West End in London, Steve Landes has been performing to packed houses. An original Broadway cast member of the show, “RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles” (Winner, 2011 Drama Desk Award for ‘Outstanding Revue’), Steve is currently touring worldwide with the show, in the role of John Lennon. When not on tour with RAIN, Steve performs solo with acoustic guitar, singing soulful versions of some of the greatest pop songs from the past five decades.
