Chuck Jones Center for Creativity is a gymnasium for the creative brain.

Music Vault Academy Students to Perform at Red Dot Auction

Three young singers studying at the Music Vault Academy in Laguna Hills will perform during the Red Dot VIII Preview Event. They are Isabella Frangopol, Milla DeVilliers, and Dominique Ilie. Milla and Dominique have performed previously at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, but this will be Isabella's debut.The Music Vault Academy focuses in high quality music classes for all ages by creating a community environment where musicians can thrive through learning, performing and recording their achievements.

The Music Vault Academy is the only school in Orange County that provides comprehensive services essential to the development of a complete artist.

It works with people who care about the world of music because they feel the same way. The Music Vault Academy believes in the power of music to change people’s lives for the better.

Costa Mesa, CA: Chuck Jones Center for Creativity announced today that they have cut ticket prices in half for their annual spring fundraiser, the Red Dot Auction, scheduled for Friday, May 11—just two days before Mother’s Day—for anyone bringing their mother, grandmothers, aunts, or mothers-to-be.  

“Chuck Jones loved his mother, Mable “Nana” Jones, dearly, and treated her royally at all times. Her nurturing guidance when he and his siblings were young, accounted for much of their genius talent—all four were master artists,” said Craig Kausen, Chuck Jones’s grandson, “And we thought it might be fun to treat mothers and their “others” who like art and want to support a good cause—the nurturing of innate creativity in school children, those on the autism spectrum, and seniors facing early onset dementia—to a discount on ticket prices.”

Red Dot Auction, now in its eighth year, is the premier art event of the season and the most fun you’ll have at a fundraiser. Fundraiser Supports Chuck Jones Center for Creativity’s Programs

Costa Mesa, Ca: Orange County business, WoodSnap, is joining with Chuck Jones Center for Creativity this year to present the eighth annual Red Dot Auction, the Center’s spring fundraiser. Twenty-five of their photographers will, along with WoodSnap, donate their work printed on the company’s signature birch wood, to create the WoodSnap section at the Red Dot Auction.

“WoodSnap was built on inspiring creative minds to print their favorite photos on wood.  We love supporting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity as they are masters at teaching both young and young of heart to nurture their creative genius. The Red Dot Auction is an amazing event and WoodSnap and our community are very proud to be a part of it," said Andy Brown, CEO of WoodSnap.

In addition to the WoodSnap photographers, over 100 artists from around the globe have contributed one or more canvases and 3D art objects to this special fundraising event. What differentiates The Red Dot Auction from other silent art auctions is that the contributing artists have signed their artwork on the reverse of the work of art. Consequently, attendees at the event will not know who the artist is when bidding, they’ll only have their heart to follow.

“The artists who are participating come from all levels of notoriety, skill, and accomplishment, from students to emerging to established artists; we reached out around the world hoping to capture the imagination and appreciation of these artists. We are thankful that they were willing to help us achieve our goal of promoting creativity by providing a nurturing environment where it may grow and blossom,” said Craig Kausen, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Center. “We are particularly honored to have Andy Brown and his team at WoodSnap participate and donate their time and talent to our fundraising efforts.”

“This year, we’ve mixed it up by dividing the auction into five distinct groupings,” says John Gaydos, President of the Council for Creativity which organizes this event in the spring and the Center’s “Chuck Jones Big Draw” fundraiser in the fall, “there’s now areas devoted to Landscape, Portrait, Homage, Assemblage & 3D artworks, and new this year, the WoodSnap photographers. The donated artwork is remarkable in its breadth and diversity.”

The Red Dot Auction will take place on Friday, May 11, from 7 to 10 PM at the Center located at South Coast Collection (SoCo), 3321 Hyland Avenue, Costa Mesa, California. In addition to the silent auction, there will also be a live auction featuring a collection of artwork by the “Dover Boys” –famed animators mentored by Chuck Jones, including Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo and Juliet), Chris Bailey (Kim Possible, Hop), Jeff DeGrandis (Dora the Explorer, Wizard of Oz), and Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little).

Admission is $25.00 per person ($35 per at the door) and open to the public. Buy tickets by May 1st and receive 5 free raffle tickets when you sign in at the front desk the evening of the event. A special Preview Event will be held Friday, May 11, from 5:30 PM to 7 PM in advance of the Main Event and will include the opportunity to use your Red Dots before anyone else, view and place bids on the entire collection first, enjoy a musical performance by students of Music Vault Academy, be amazed by a Glitter-painting performance by James C. Mulligan, imbibe from an open bar, and savor hors d’oeuvres by 24 Carrots Events and Catering. Red Dot Auction VIII--Call for Artists!

Dear Artists and Friends of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity,Preparations are underway for the Eighth Annual Red Dot Auction benefiting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, scheduled for Friday, May 11, 2018.

Today we’re writing to ask you to donate a work of art to this year’s Red Dot Auction.  We’re changing up the overall theme from the Life & Times of Chuck Jones to his Golden Age Decade, the 1950s. Any of the over 90 cartoons Chuck Jones directed during the years 1950 – 1959 are fodder for your imagination. A list of the cartoons is available online at the link at the bottom of this post.  

There will be five categories this year:

Landscape – predominant theme in landscape, seascape, urban-scape; may include cartoon character(s)

Portrait – may be a self-portrait or the portrait of another person or cartoon character

Homage – to an art genre, specific artist, or live action film

Assemblage – collage using unconventional materials—take something and make something new out of it or its parts

3D – we’ll provide an 8” 3D “Cre8ive Peeple” (see below) to be painted and enhanced as you envision

There are only 30 spaces available in each of the five different sections, all requests for a specific section will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Go to this webpage to submit your request: Red Dot Auction 2018. 

The canvas provided for the first four sections will be a 12” square and as last year, we ask that you sign the artwork on the reverse.  For the 3D object, please sign the bottom of the object. HOWEVER, new this year, you may choose to work in any size canvas or other substrate you'd like to provide yourself. 

You may prefer to work on paper or another substrate and that’s fine, as long as we can mount it to the 12” square canvas for presentation the night of the event. The artwork should be signed on the reverse so that bidders at this silent auction will not know who has created which work of art.

Canvases are due back no later than Monday, March 27, 2018! Again this year we will bring the Red Dot Auction online for pre-bidding only. This online auction will go live mid-April 2018 and end the evening of Tuesday, May 8, 2018 In order to be included in it, your artwork must arrive no later than March 27, 2018.  

And again this year a commemorative poster, similar to the one shown, will be printed; 30 canvases will be selected to represent this year’s Red Dot Auction. Two of the posters will be produced and sold the evening of the event. To be considered for inclusion, your artwork must arrive no later than March 15, 2017.

Participating artists include British POP art star and graphic novelist, Des Taylor; Michael Scharf, producer and creator of the children’s animated program, “Do Re and Mi” starring Kristen Bell; Art Deco-inspired contemporary Orange County artist, Mike Kungl, and Eric Goldberg, longtime Disney animator and director.

The Red Dot Auction will take place on Saturday, May 6h from 7 to 10 PM at the Center located at South Coast Collection (SoCo), 3321 Hyland Avenue, Costa Mesa, California. Admission is $25.00 per person ($35 per at the door) and open to the public. Buy tickets by April 25th and receive 5 free raffle tickets when you sign in at the front desk the evening of the event. A Special Message from the Chairman

Dear friends of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity,If it were possible for me to stand in front of each of you who contributed to the success of this year's Red Dot Auction, take your hands in mine and personally say thank you, I would do it.

Instead, I must rely on words to convey my sincerest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the artists who created such wonderful artwork, to the hundreds of supporters who attended either one or both of the evening events and bid on and won the beautiful artwork created by these incredibly talented artists, to the generous sponsors who helped by underwriting a portion of the costs of the event, to the Center's Board of Directors who help guide the growth of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, and to the Center's staff and volunteers who produced and organized the event.

Please know that I am deeply humbled by the outpouring of love shown to the Center by the people like you who made the two-night Red Dot Auction such a rousing success. Not only for your financial support, but also for your commitment to the vision of the Center, a world where creativity is known in every discipline, by the many, not just the few. With your help we are on the way to achieving that.

We see it in the faces of the children in schools without arts education who spend a workshop hour with our teaching artists, we hear it from the young adults who are on the autism spectrum and their families who join us for an evening of painting, we feel it when those with early onset dementia and other neurological issues discover the joy of their own creative genius.

This is the wealth that creativity spreads when people like you come together in common cause for the betterment of our world.

Red Dot Auction VI--Preview Night Wow!

The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity's Red Dot Auction Preview night went off in spectacular fashion last night. With live entertainment provided by one of the Center's sponsors, Music Vault Academy, guests were treated to a room full of beautiful artwork in this year's silent auction and food provided by Casa del Lago Events. Artist Jimmy Mulligan did a performance painting that had the crowd all a-glitter and cartoonist brothers, Eric & Bill Teitelbaum wowed with their Chuck Talk on creativity and inspiration. Meanwhile, another sponsor, the Blackwing Foundation, interviewed a few of the attending artists about their process and their inspiration. Many "Red Dots" were applied to works throughout the night with our traditional cowbells ringing out each time one was used. Tonight's the Main Event, tickets are still available online for $25 per, ChuckJonesCenter.org/RedDot or $35 per person at the door. Which Artist's Work Will You Go Home with at the Red Dot Auction?

With just three days left before the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year’s Red Dot Auction. This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Ron Ferdinand.Ron was born in 1951 in New York City. “My interest in cartooning began as soon as I could turn on a TV set! Crusader Rabbit, Colonel Bleep and Clutch Cargo were early influences,” said Ron. With the advent of the ’60s and Hanna-Barbera, I was in seventh heaven. The animated Disney films were also a sanctuary from the outside world.” Ron attended The School of Visual Arts from 1971-1973 and The Art Students League in 1974, where he studied anatomy with Gustav Rehburger. In 1981, Ron read an interview with Hank Ketcham in Jud Hurd’s monthly publication, Cartoonist PROfiles. “I sent Hank some pencil sketches of the various characters, and after a few months of correspondence, I was brought on board to work on the Dennis the Menace comic books for Marvel.” In 1982, Ron began drawing the Dennis Sunday page, which he continues to draw today.

With just a week left before the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year’s Red Dot Auction. Today we feature artist Naylene Justis.Naylene Justis has been fascinated by drawing since she was able to hold a crayon. She has been equally fascinated with silliness, and so cartoons have been a lifelong passion. She studied animation at Cal State Fullerton where she graduated in 2012. She currently works as a caricature artist at Downtown Disney turning real people into cartoon drawings. When she isn’t drawing cartoons or devouring mammoth novels she can often be found volunteering at the Chuck Jones Center.

Which Artist's Work Will You Go Home with at the Red Dot Auction?

With just a week left before the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year’s Red Dot Auction. This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Jimm Nawrocki.My current work is mixed media collage with a facial or figurative imagery focus. 

I generally start out with an image that I have manipulated with the computer and print out this image on my ink jet printer.  I then take that image, make different versions of it through additional manipulations, and cut and paste parts of these versions onto the original image to create a new image.  I will also add different elements, tape, googly eyes, stickers, news print, wire mesh, cardboard or whatever, to the image to change it even more.

I don’t know that I have a specific goal or end result in mind when I go through this building process.  I am very much drawn to making the image into something else, pushing it into a different direction, and just seeing what happens.  I want my creation to have a certain ambiguity or uncertainty.  My art should express a range of ideas and give the viewer something to think about.

This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist June Valentine-Ruppe. June was born and raised in California where she continues to pursue her love of drawing, illustrating and painting. For over 20 years she has illustrated more than 120 collectable children's books for Publishers such as Disney, Random House, Scholastic, Golden Books, Lyrick and Publishers International. In these books, June illustrated licensed Characters including: Sesame Street Characters; Disney Characters, such as the Fab Five, Little Mermaid and Winnie The Pooh; Lamb Chop and Friends; and Barney the Dinosaur, among many others. But, according to June, “ my real love has always been painting on canvas, which gives me the freedom to create my own original art work. I love bringing interesting characters to life”.

With less than two weeks until the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year’s Red Dot Auction. This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Jeffrey Speiser.Jeff Speiser’s talent for art was recognized at an early age. His kindergarten report card noted that he was the “best male artist in the class.” (Thanks to his mom for holding onto his report cards for all these years). Jeff attended Cornell University where he majored in Film and Animation. During and after college, Jeff worked as an assistant animator and layout artist for Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, MTV Animation and on the Academy Award-nominated short, The Chicken from Outer Space. Today, Jeff continues to work in design and marketing where he has completed projects for brands like Disney, The Walking Dead, Marvel Comics, the NBA, the NFL and more. Jeff lives in Celebration, FL with his wife Julie, son Connor and daughter Willow.

Today we feature artist Andrea Rosales.Andrea is an illustrator, graphic designer, concept and comic-book artist with a passion for visual storytelling and a love for infusing her art with a sense of whimsy, vigor and puns.

While growing up in Portland, OR, Andrea cultivated her love for art over the course of many rainy afternoons. Having recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University, Andrea is now based in sunny Los Angeles, CA working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.

She has exhibited her work at CTN Animation Expo in Burbank (2014, 2015) and at Rose City Comic-Con (2015) in Portland, OR. Currently she runs her online art shop, Good Walrus Goods and is working on Nine Twilights, a web comic adventure series which fuses magical girls and Norse mythology together. (NineTwilights.com)

When not drawing, Andrea loves to watch old school cartoons, read comics and enjoy a hot cup o' cocoa.

(Jamie takes private lessons at the Center with its teaching artist, Denise Dion-Scoyni.)Jamie Martin is a 9th grade student and has a passion for creativity. When he was just under two years old you couldn't keep  him from his Lego's if he had an idea he had already begun working on. Jamie loves animation and everything that goes into the creative process from beginning to end, there isn't any detail that escapes his interest. He is really honored to get to participate in the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity’s Red Dot Auction. Jamie has really benefited from the classes he has participated in at the center,and hopes to continue his artistic growth. He loves the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, and Marvin Martian.

Today we feature artist Krissta Passanante.Many Items and scenes from my childhood still inspire and influence me to this day. As the daughter of a successful Hollywood set builder, I have always had an infatuation with old-fashioned theaters and props. Folklore and fairytales also instigate most of my work. Taking inspiration from my hometown in Utah, life and nature often collide in my paintings. I have always believed that my art should portray that which can only be imagined. As a result, my paintings and illustrations often materialize scenes that draw in surrealistic or dream-like qualities. I want the viewer to be able to think about the work and observe it as if they were the painter themselves. I hope they can imagine themselves in the fantasy world I have created.

Today we feature artist Bruce Berglund.Bruce Berglund started drawing by the time he could hold a pencil. One day Bruce's mother noticed him ignoring a new coloring book she had just given him. When she asked why he wasn't using it, Bruce commented, "I don't want to color someone else's drawings". He started oil painting at age 12 and at college he pursued Advertising, and Graphic Design achieving degrees in both. In 1985 Bruce relocated to Southern California where his steady illustration work won him notoriety as one of the top illustrators in Orange County. Bruce went on to open his own design studio (Berglund Advertising Design) in Costa Mesa in 1989. With less than three weeks until the Red Dot Auction, we wanted to share with you the stories of the artists who have donated art work (or in some cases, more than one) to this year's Red Dot Auction. This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Terri Hardin.Terri has been an artist and puppeteer for over 30 years working in films and television.  Her credits include, Ghostbusters, Indian in the Cupboard, both Flintstone films, both Men In Black Films, Monkeybone, The Country Bears and Team America.  She’s worked with the Jim Henson Company since 1989. Her work can also be seen as ensemble on Disney’s new Muppet Show.

She was in the Disney/Henson hit TV show Dinosaurs, where she played Baby Sinclair’s arms, and she designed and built the Foster Imposters at the Character Shop, for those funny Foster Farms Chicken Commercials.  She has played the passenger chicken in these commercials since the beginning.

Terri is also a sculptor.  She is well known for her collectible figurines she creates for the Walt Disney Company. When she was a Walt Disney Imagineer, she designed rides and attractions for many of the parks. In Paris Disneyland you can walk through Dragon’s Lair and in Tokyo Disneyland., you can ride the Splash Mountain boat with the rabbit she sculpted, and sail down the main drop she created.

Before she worked for Walt Disney Imagineering she sculpted creatures and animals for many films including Jungle 2 Jungle, the drugged cat Tim Allen hits with a blow dart, in Relic, the prehistoric Ground Sloth skeleton, and the dove of peace and the presidential parakeets in Mars Attacks.

She is currently working on her Memoir working title “Little Zebra.”  The story of a how she was able to rise above adversity, keep her sense of humor and positive attitude to rise to success in the entertainment industry.

This fundraiser, now in its sixth year, benefits the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Today we feature artist Eric Scales. Eric Scales has been an illustrator for 15 years. An animation fan from a young age, Eric loves capturing moments from memorable cartoons. He has illustrated books for Dreamworks, Hasbro, and Scholastic Publishing and he recently completed a dozen paintings for Walt Disney Imagineering to be used at the upcoming Shanghai Disneyland Resort. Eric currently creates artwork and animation cels for the Disneyland Resort in California. This is his fourth year contributing to the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity's Red Dot Auction.
