Dandelion Moms, a women's lifestyle website founded by Melissa Northway, recently spotlighted us on their website. Check out what she has to say about us!

A few months ago my daughter and I were checking out a new shopping center called the SoCo as a friend told me there was a shop there that had the best coffee in town.  Now that’s a pretty big statement so I figured I would check it out.  The center has some really fantastic and trendy shops and the design of the shopping area is very cool.  I felt a bit like a hipster for the day which doesn’t happen too often these days.  Read more...

"Famishius Fantasticus" Premiers at Dakota High School

famishius1_0.jpg

Michael Markowski, a composer and longtime fan of Chuck Jones, recently was commissioned by the Wind Ensemble of Dakota High School in Macomb, Michigan to create a musical work for them. The result was "Famishius Fantasticus" a four-minute "wild concert-closer" in the words of the composer. Mr. Markowski writes in a letter to Chuck Redux: "Thank you so much for allowing me to share my music with you. Chuck Jones has been a surprisingly big part of my creative life, from watching Looney Tunes as a kid to studying them in college as a film major. Famishius Fantasticus was so much fun to write, and I'm excited that I will be able to share my love for the original Looney Tunes cartoons with the current generation of high school and college music students who, in most cases, have never even seen one."

In the foreword to the score, he's said, "When I was first asked to write a piece that "captured the energy of the students," I couldn't help but think that Wile E. Coyote was the man (or animal) for the job. The title, Famishius Fantasticus, is a direct allusion to the faux binomial (the scientific Latin name) of Wile E. Coyote, as shown in the opening freeze-frame of the 1956 Looney Tunes cartoon, There They Go-Go-Go!

"...[Famishius Fantasticus] is dedicated to all my friends and colleagues who vehemently go after their dreams, who never give up, and who continue totry new things no matter how many crazy ideas might blow up in their faces."

And we agree! Here, then is the Dakota High School Wind Ensemble of Macomb, Michigan, performing Michael Markowski's Famishius Fantasticus. Enjoy!

(Clicking on the title in the above paragraph will take you to the performance. Please pay close attention to the percussionists, they work overtime for this piece. You may also note that ping-pong balls, an air horn and the magnificent Mahler Hammer are utilized to produce some delightful sounds.)

Chuck Jones Retrospective Art Exhibit to Open at Cartoon Art Museum--San Francisco

FAFU-01-005207220dpi20copy20blog.jpg

Chuck Jones: Drawing on Imagination 100 Years of an Animated ArtistCartoon Art Museum Exhibition:  February 9 – May 5, 2013

San Francisco:  The Cartoon Art Museum has announced a centennial retrospective of the art of legendary animation director and creator Chuck Jones, on display from February 9 through May 5, 2013.  The exhibition, comprising 100 works of art from the late 1930s through the late 1990s, is entitled Chuck Jones: Drawing on Imagination—100 Years of an Animated Artist. Artwork for the exhibit is provided by the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity in Costa Mesa, CA.

Chuck Jones, a graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts in Valencia), drew $1.00 portraits on Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles before he began his career in animation as a cel washer at Ubbe Iwerks Studio in 1932. He directed his first cartoon, “The Night Watchman,” for Leon Schlesinger Productions in 1938 and went to helm such classic Warner Brothers shorts as "What's Opera, Doc?" and "One Froggy Evening."  Winner of three animation Oscars and an honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar for "the creation of classic cartoons and cartoon characters," Jones is today considered synonymous with the "Golden Age" of studio animation and has inspired many of today’s most significant film directors, artists, and animators.

“I have been a fan of the Cartoon Art Museum for many years and to finally have such an extensive exhibition presented here is like a dream come true.  My grandfather loved San Francisco and its denizens. This exhibition, with many never-before-exhibited works, is a masterpiece to celebrate Chuck’s Centennial Celebration,” said Craig Kausen, Chairman of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity and Chuck’s grandson.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to partner with the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, and to bring our patrons 100 pieces of classic and rarely seen artwork from one of the greatest and most influential cartoonists in American history,” said Cartoon Art Museum curator Andrew Farago.  “Chuck received the Cartoon Art Museum’s Sparky Award for lifetime achievement in 1998, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to further celebrate his extraordinary career and talent.”

New Program at Chuck Jones Center for Creativity Launches in February

Costa Mesa, CA: Linda Jones Clough, daughter of legendary animation director and creator, Chuck Jones, and founding trustee of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity located at 3321 Hyland Ave., Suite A, Costa Mesa, CA—in South Coast Collection (SoCo), announced today the formation and first meeting date of theChuck Jones Essential Reading List Book Club & Discussion Group for Wednesday, February 27 from 7 to 8 PM at the Center. A suggested donation to the Center for participating is $15.00 per meeting.

“Many years ago, my father made a list of what he considered to be an essential reading list for any literate, English-speaking person. He felt that all 49 books should be read at least once, if not more often. The Chuck Jones Essential Reading List Book Club & Discussion Group will work its way through the list one book per month,” said Mrs. Clough, “we’ll start with James Stephens’ “The Crock of Gold”, a rich mix of folklore and philosophy by one of Ireland’s renowned authors.”

No one is too old or too young to join the club as long as they are willing to read the book and participate in the discussion. The book club will meet every fourth Wednesday of the month from 7 to 8 PM at the Center. Participants are expected to read the book or story prior to the discussion meeting and be prepared to share ideas, inspiration, or short passages of interest. The leader for the discussion will rotate among participants; each leader for the next month’s meeting will volunteer the prior month.

The books selected for the first half of 2013 from the Chuck Jones Essential Reading List are: February 27, “The Crock of Gold” by James Stephens; March 27, “Cabbages and Kings” by O’Henry; April 24, “Farewell My Lovely” by Raymond Chandler; May 22, “The Red Pony by John Steinbeck; June 26, “Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter. The entire year’s worth of books and meeting dates can be found at the Center’s website calendar of events, www.ChuckJonesCenter.org/calendar.

Many of the books are available for free by downloading them to your Kindle or other tablet/computer or for a few dollars through Amazon and other venues for those who prefer the sweet smell of paper and turning actual pages instead of virtual ones.

"Simpsons" Storyboard Artist Stephen Reis at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity

reis20drawing20of20mr.20burns2032520pixels.jpg

Writing from Costa Mesa: This reporter was fortunate enough to witness "Simpsons" storyboard artist, Stephen Reis (center in photo below) in action this past Saturday, November 3rd, at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity during their "Great, Grand Chuck Jones Family Happening!" With a sharp pencil in each hand (many thanks to Pencils.com for the gift of Chuck Jones's preferred drawing instrument, the Blackwing 602, which all of those in attendance were able to use), Reis wowed those lucky aspirants with his dexterity and command of character design.  Over a three-hour period, over 30 students of animation, both young and old alike, learned from one of the most creative storyboard and character design artists working in animation today. By the end of the session and because of his guidance and nurturing manner each student had produced a group of characters from "The Simpsons". Smiles all around!

Everyone at the Center extends a heartfelt thank you to Stephen and we look forward to his return in the future!

The Great, Grand Chuck Jones Family Happening!

Meet “Simpsons” storyboard artist and director, Stephen Reis, on Saturday, November 3, 2012, beginning at 10 AM. He’ll lead a workshop on creating storyboards and character development during the Center’s “The Great, Grand Chuck Jones Family Happening!” This event is free and open to the public and will end at 1PM. The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity is located at 3321 Hyland Ave., Costa Mesa in Orange County’s hippest new gathering place, South Coast Collection (SoCo).Immediately following “The Great, Grand Chuck Jones Family Happening” the Chuck Jones Gallery will host a reception for painter Mike Kungl whose work graces the halls of Warner Bros. Television, DreamWorks Entertainment and Ingram Micro to name but a few of his corporate collectors. His Art Deco and Art Moderne-inspired imagery is always in full bloom whether he’s painting a beautiful woman or Bugs Bunny and one of his adversaries. The reception for this artist will end at 4 PM and is free and open to the public.

Just Added! “Artables”, an art camp for pre-schoolers and their parents, led by Gina Latora, will be in the Tower at the Center from 10AM – 1PM. She’ll provide art stations for your young creative artists, such as ink stamping on paper and creating collages.

The Alex Theatre is located at 216 Brand Boulevard, Glendale, CA 91203. Chuck Jones, whose credits include four Academy Award-winning short films, directed over 300 films in his lifetime, with such memorable titles as “Rabbit Seasoning?”, “Robin Hood Daffy”, and “Feed the Kitty”.  In 1992 his “What’s Opera, Doc?” was the first short animated film to be inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, subsequently two others have been added, “One Froggy Evening” and “Duck Amuck”.  Jones, an honorary lifetime member of the Director’s Guild, is considered to be one of the pioneers of the animated film, feted and honored at dozens of International Film Festivals from Annecy to Zagreb.  In 1985 Jones was the subject of a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.  In 1999, Jones founded the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, a non-profit public charity whose vision is to inspire the innate creative genius within each person that leads to a more joyous, passionate, and harmonious life and world.

Presenters this evening will include:

*Carl Bell, animator and clean-up artist, will be one of the presenters. A Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bell worked with Jones in the late 1960s and early 1970s at MGM. His career includes work with Clampett Productions early in his career and most recently with Disney Studios.

*Eric Goldberg:  Eric Goldberg joined Disney Studios in 1990 as the supervising animator responsible for the movements, personality and soul of the Genie in Aladdin.  Goldberg’s strong background in animation next earned him his directorial debut on Pocahontas, which he followed up as the supervising animator on Phil, the salty satyr and trainer of heroes in Hercules.  Goldberg also directed the “Carnival of the Animals” and “Rhapsody in Blue” segments of Fantasia 2000, the continuation of Walt Disney’s 1940 masterpiece.

Goldberg not only served as the director of animation for Warner Bros.’ 2003 live-action and animation hybrid feature “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” but he also provided the voices of the cartoon characters Marvin Martian, Tweety and Speedy Gonzalez.  Working with Bob Kurtz of Kurtz + Friends, he animated the title sequence of MGM’s 2006 remake of “The Pink Panther”.  His relationship with Chuck Jones began in the early 1990s and continued until Jones’ passing in 2002.

*Jerry Beck is an animation historian, author, blogger, animation producer and industry consultant to Warner Bros. Studios and has been an executive with Nickelodeon and Disney.

Saturday Morning Cartoons & Quick Draw!

Saturday20Cartoon.jpg

Join the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity and the Center for Living Peace for Saturday morning cartoons & quick draw the first Saturday of the month beginning September 1st! Chapman University professor of animation, Doug Lothers, will lead aspiring artists on a journey of creativity. Suggested donation $1.00 to $5.00.

Enjoy the escapades of Bugs Bunny, Pepé Le Pew, Daffy Duck, and more of the characters generations have loved for decades! We'll watch Chuck Jones’ animated world unfold before our eyes and periodically stop to capture that "best moment" without having time to think.  We'll watch some more and do it again and again to create unforgettable memories of that day.

The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity inspires joy and innovation in people of all ages, energizing them to transform their lives, their communities, and society as a whole.  The best way to tap into pure creativity, the energy that dwells inside all of us, we need to trust our minds and hands and NOT think.  Whether it's watching a cartoon or watching your child play, we hold onto the best moments of our day in pictures and store them away as brilliant memories.  Chuck Jones would do the same thing, only he would draw on those memories and turn them into beautiful art.  For Cartoon Quick Draw, we get the chance to be Chuck Jones for an hour.
